History of Baker Orthodontics
Dr. Baker is an Escondido native, and has been professionally serving the people of his home town since 1988. He is also a second-generation orthodontist, whose father, Dr. Guy T. Baker, founded Baker Orthodontics in 1978. Dr. Brad graduated from San Pasqual High School, and then attended Brigham Young University, where he earned a bachelors degree in Zoology. He loved his college experience, and received two academic scholarships during his time at BYU. As an undergraduate, Dr. Baker participated in research studies on the affects of smoking and alcohol on fetal development.
Dr. Baker earned his dental degree at the UCLA School of Dentistry. While attending UCLA, he was involved in research in the department of Orthodontics, doing early pioneering work in the use of dental implants as anchorage for orthodontic treatment, a procedure which is now used extensively in actual practice. He was awarded the Orthodontic Award upon graduation from UCLA.
Dr. Baker was accepted into the Hospital Dentistry Residency at the U.C. San Francisco School of Dentistry. He worked in the Department of Oral Surgery, and acquired an excellent background in emergency dentistry and in the area of combined orthodontics and orthognathic surgery.
From San Francisco, Dr. Baker traveled back to Los Angeles to complete his advanced specialty training and clinical certificate in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. This intensive two-year course of study also included a Master’s degree in Craniofacial Biology, which included in-depth studies of the development of the head, face, and jaws.
In 1988, Dr. Baker joined his father in his orthodontic practice in Escondido, where they had the great pleasure of practicing together for five years, until his father’s retirement. During this period, he met and married his sweetheart, Angie, and they now have three beautiful children, Julia, Alex, and Shannon. Angie is very active at the school that the kids attend: the San Pasqual Union School.
The Bakers are very active in church service and youth programs. Dr. Baker has, for many years, been active in the Boy Scouts of America. An Eagle Scout himself, he loves the scouting program, and the impact it has on the lives of the youth it serves. He is excited to get on the scouting trail with his own son, Alex. Dr. Baker also enjoys camping, water sports, fishing, woodwork, travel, and just hanging out with his wife and kids!
Dr. Baker has been certified as a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics, and is a Past President of the San Diego Academy of Orthodontists. He has also served as a Program Chair for the California Association of Orthodontists in their Continuing Education committee. Dr. Baker places a high priority on keeping up with the latest research and technology in the field of orthodontics, and bringing these innovations into his practice for the benefit of his patients. He offers a variety of treatment modalities, including Inovation® braces, which offer low-force, low-friction treatment, for shorter appointments, and quicker, more pain-free treatment. They come in classic silver, nearly-invisible ceramic, and now in completely invisible lingual (behind the teeth) types. He is also a certified Invisalign® provider since 2000.
Dr. Baker enjoys what he does. “I love being an orthodontist!” he says. “I can’t think of anything else I’d rather do. I’m working with a top-notch team, and my patients are great! The field of orthodontics is changing, and now we can offer such exciting new treatments that make it easier than ever for people of all ages to get a beautiful smile. And I get to do all this right here in my own home town!”
